Entertainment:

“Black Girls Rock!” Awards show on BET (November 7, 2010) was filled with many memorable and worthy performances, but this rendition of Nina Simone’s “Four Women” was undeniable.

Jill Scott, Ledisi, Marsha Ambrosius and Kelly Price brought the house down as they musically embodied “Aunt Sarah,” “Safronia,” “Sweet Thing” and “Peaches.”

“Four Women” first appeared on Nina Simone’s 1966 album, “Wild Is the Wind” and addresses stereotypes of African-American women.

Watch the incredible performance from Black Girls Rock! below:

Now, it gets even better when you  watch the original artist Nina Simone sing the same song.

These ladies are true artists and an inspiration! I’ve watched both of these videos over a dozen times and can’t get enough!  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Hair Care:

Etrina (a current client) in Chicago recently wrote into and asked the following question: “How can I keep my natural hair healthy and growing while wearing a weave (100% human hair, of course!)?

Nycayen Recommends:

Be sure to have your ends clipped before the braiding process and the installation of your weave.
Make sure your stylist uses some type of moisturizer when braiding.  I recommend Mizani’s Coconut Souffle Light Moisturizing Hairdress.  Which is light and does not weight your hair down and will prevent your ends from becoming dry and brittle.   This product is available at a variety of stores and also online at Amazon.com.

Fashion:

Recently I participated as the hairstylist in a editorial fashion shoot for a 9 page layout to appear in  Fashionista’s magazine.   We shot on location in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and prep the model’s in a nearby studio.  It turns out it was on one of New York’s coldest winter’s day so far this year!  None-the-less, we had a blast working on this project.

Product Recommendations:

Each month I will share with you my professional opinion and recommendations on existing and new hair care products.  This month I would like to tell you about two products from Kerastase.

After using this shampoo and conditioner with my clients, I was completely sold. If you can stomach spending over $20 on a bottle of shampoo, and you want to take really good care of your hair, I can't recommend this highly enough.

This shampoo makes your hair feel squeaky clean but also hydrates it at the same time.  An amazing combination!  You won’t  need more than a quarter size amount to get a really good lather.  Leave it in for a minute or so and give your hair a treat and some LOVE before rinsing it out.  Your hair will LOVE you back!  I found this online at a great price on Amazon.com.

The second product I recommend is the conditioner.  It’s the only conditioner or masque you’ll ever need!

Kerastase Masquintence Epais (in other words ... “conditioner”)

The only conditioner or masque you'll ever need!  Yes, this is expensive, but you only need a tiny amount. It has a silky smooth texture which works into the hair really well. It helps keep fine hair from having flyaway ends and is never greasy.  It's fantastic. Truly. You only need a little bit, and it just s-l-i-d-e-s through your hair.  It’s great for color, chemical treated or overly treated hair as well.  This is not a daily conditioner, but something you would use once or twice a week.  It’s expensive, but it WORKS and the bottle lasts longer than you think  Available on Amazon from 42.99.  Click on this link to buy it online:

New York Eats:
Each month I will give you one of my personal recommendations for an “eats” place which will entice your culinary urges!
Below is a great Italian restaurant located on the Upper Eastside of Manhattan.  This month’s pick is Due Italian Restaurant!

Due
Italian Restaurant

Address - 1396 3rd Avenue between E 79th and E 80th Avenue. For directions please click here.

Due restaurant is a casually elegant, comfortable and cozy italian restaurant located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

I recommend ordering one of the house pasta specials “Rollatine alla Montanara” for $18.00. An amazing dish of homemade pasta stuffed with spinach, porcini, ricotta and parmigiano.  It’s to die for!

Nyck putting the finishing touches on the hot iron curls with model Melissa.

On location in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, models Mellissa, Jessica and Danni. And of course, hair by Nycayen!
